This book was written as though it had a conversation I'd been dying to have in mind. All the questions I wanted to ask and the insights I wanted to know were answered! Great information and yet the author still keeps me interested the whole way though.
Hats off to Mr. Altendorf! Editing years worth of screenwriting discussion into a coherent narrative that's anything but boring had to be a major challenge. Even though I was familiar with some of the material presented, reading Mr. Altendorf's well-edited text gave me a fresh look at the screenwriting process, and what can go wrong... or right.
At four bucks on , I thought I'd risk buying this latest "must have" book on screenwriting. Happy to say it was worth every penny. Rather than just another book rehashing screenwriting rules and protocol, I found the "chat room" style format different and refreshing. It doesn't replace Syd Field's SCREENPLAY or McKee's STORY - or a dozen other requisite books depending on the list maker - but it clearly treads new ground on the instructional screenwriting shelf. It feels like eavesdropping on a group of passionate writers, with thoughtful questions from wannabes and insightful answers from seasoned pros. Just the sort of stimulation I need from time to time to keep on track and continue filling those pages. Two thumbs up.

Screenplay Form and Structure is a source of encouragement and a toolbox for the writer who is otherwise "following the contorted path lit only by a muse with a flickering lantern," as one contributor put it.
No matter whether your learning style is verbal, logical, social or solitary, you will benefit from this conversational presentation of the business of writing for the movie screen. Serious about their livelihoods, the contributors nevertheless allow themselves both humor and sometimes embarrassing candor. These are edited threads from several years of online Writer's office conversations relating to the topic of screenwriting, and you will get to know Alan, Rob, Bill, Naomi, Jim and others while they unselfishly sharpen each other's skills and work to improve their own product.
The contributors are a diverse group from different aspects of film making, and include producers, editors, directors and screenwriters. The editing is crisp enough to preserve the flow of information for the focused reader, but generous enough to allow the humor and humanity of the individual participants to shine.
I particularly appreciated
Alan's passages on Marketing, including discussion of filmmaking expenses and the economics of screenwriting assignments;
Naomi's "Holy Crap! What Do I Do Now?" when a director wanted to take her script to a producer;
And almost anything Jim Kalergis had to say.
I am happy to have this book on my reference stand and heartily recommend it to others of a similar bent.
